Welcome to York Philharmonic Male Voice Choir

The ‘Phil’, as the choir is affectionately known, plays a significant part in the rich musical fabric of York. The choir loves to sing, and the passion, commitment, and continuity that has sustained it since 1925 is very much in evidence today.
Whether your taste is for contemporary or classical, west-end or opera, folk song or spiritual, the wide repertoire will offer entertainment and pleasure. The choir has won competitions and audience acclaim in European venues and in the UK, from the Royal Albert Hall to Village Halls, from Castle Howard to the Castle Museum and from York Minster to a Dales Chapel.

The strength and success of the choir goes beyond the concert platform, and is heightened by the depth of friendship that exists between members, families, friends and sponsors.

Enjoy your visit to our website, and we look forward to seeing you soon at one of our many concerts, and of, hopefully, welcoming you to join us as either a singing member or as a friend.

“There’s sure no passion in the human soul, but finds its food in music”
George Lillo [1693-1739]

Berwick MVC joint concert 12/5/2012

Saturday, 12th May 2012, St Michael le Belfrey Church, York
This is a one-off opportunity to see and listen to, not one, but two accomplished Male Voice Choirs in concert. In the shadow of York Minster, the church of St Michael le Belfrey provides the ideal setting for these Male Voice Choirs to deliver their varied and challenging programme in four part harmony.
Berwick MVC kick off the proceedings with their rendition of " Rachie", a Humphreys arrangement of this score by Roberts which is followed by "Bridge Over Troubled Waters", a Medley from "Oliver ", " Let it be me " and a solo by Mike Bennet.
"The Phil" open their section with, "Tom The Pipers Son", "Rustics and Fishermen", "Grandfather's Clock" and "The Lost Chord" which leads nicely into their solo piece from Tenor Richard Kay. "The Phil" take us to the interval with the rousing, "Stout Hearted Men".
Berwick MVC start the second half with, " Godre'r Coed" composed by Davies and Addison " ,then "The Rose", "All in the April Evening" and a traditional American Trilogy. Robin Cheer soloes on the clarinet which is followed by " The Phil" with the Arwel Hughes composition "Tydi a Roddaist", "When The Saints Go Marching In", "Seventy Six Trombones "and "Two Little Boys" a Theodore Morse composition made famous by Rolf Harris. Then Musical Director Berenice Lewis takes centre stage with her solo number. "The Phil" brings the evening to a close with the highly emotive Jones/Watts composition "Morte Christe".
There is surely something in this Choral evening, presented by two choirs  to suit every taste and where better as a venue than the Church of St Michael Le Belfrey in the center of YORK
